Life Privacy Policy

Last updated 21 September 2026

Life is a family organiser: shared to-do and shopping lists, habits, notes and chore charts. This policy explains exactly what the app stores, who else can see it, and how to get rid of it.

It is written to be read, not to cover us. If something here is unclear or looks wrong, please ask.

Who is responsible

Life is run by an individual developer, not a company. For anything in this policy — questions, requests, complaints — contact:

What the app stores

Your account

What you put in the app

Technical information

On your device

Your lists are also kept in your browser's local storage so the app works offline and starts quickly. That copy stays on your device. Clearing your browser data removes it; the copy on the server is unaffected.

What the app does not do

Permissions the app asks for

PermissionWhyOptional?
Notifications To deliver the reminders you set. Without it, reminders cannot reach you. Yes
Microphone Only while you hold the voice button, to turn speech into a note. See below. Yes
Camera To take a profile picture, to scan a QR code when joining a shared list, and to photograph a written list so it can be added for you. Yes

About voice notes

Voice input uses the speech recognition built into your browser or phone, not our own. On most browsers — including Chrome and Android — that means the audio is sent to the browser vendor (Google) to be transcribed, under their privacy policy, not ours. We never receive or store the audio. Only the resulting text is saved, as a note in your list. If you would rather that did not happen, type the note instead.

About scanning a written list

When you photograph a list, the photo is sent to Google's Gemini AI on Google Cloud (Vertex AI) so the handwriting can be read. Only the resulting text comes back, and only the items you choose to add are saved. We do not keep the photo, and it is not used to train Google's models. If the AI cannot be reached, the app reads the photo on your phone instead and nothing is uploaded. If you would rather no photo is ever sent, type or dictate the items instead.

Who else can see your data

People you share with

This is the main one. When you join or create a shared list, everyone on that list can see everything in it — the items, who added them, who ticked them off, and the names and pictures of everyone on the list. Sharing is the point of the feature, but it is worth being deliberate about it. You can leave a shared list at any time, and the list owner can remove people.

Our service provider

The app runs on Google Firebase (sign-in, database, hosting, notifications, server functions). Your data is stored on Google's servers and is subject to Google's terms as our processor. We do not use any other third-party service to store or process your data.

Data is currently stored in Google's United States region. If you are in the UK or EU, that means your data is transferred outside your country, under the safeguards Google provides for its cloud customers.

Nobody else

We do not disclose your data to anyone else, except where we are legally required to.

Children

Life has a chore feature intended for children, and this needs a parent's involvement.

A child on a chore list has their own sign-in, and the parent who runs the list can see what they complete and manage their stars.

If your child is under the age at which they can consent for themselves (13 in the US, 13–16 depending on the country in the UK and EU), an account should only be created for them by their parent or guardian, and only with your consent. As their parent you can see their list, remove them from it, and ask us to delete their account entirely using the process below.

We do not knowingly collect data from a child without that involvement. If you believe a child's account was created without a parent's consent, contact us and we will delete it.

Free trials

If you start a free trial, we record that the trial has been used so that the same person cannot take an unlimited number of them.

To do that without keeping a list of customer email addresses, your email is put through a one-way scrambling function and only the result is stored. It cannot be turned back into your email address.

This one record survives account deletion. If it did not, deleting an account and signing up again would grant an endless supply of free trials. It contains no name, no email address and no content — only the scrambled value and the trial dates. This is the single exception to the deletion promise below, and we think it is a fair one, but you should know about it.

How long data is kept

Your rights

If you are in the UK or EU, the UK GDPR and GDPR give you the right to access your data, correct it, delete it, get a copy of it, and object to how it is used. You can exercise most of these in the app itself; for anything else, email the address above and we will respond.

You also have the right to complain to your data protection regulator — in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.

Wherever you live, you can delete your account and your data using the process on the account deletion page.

Security

Sign-in is handled by Google Firebase Authentication; we never see or store your password. Access to your data is enforced by server-side rules, so another user cannot read a list they are not a member of. Data is encrypted in transit.

No system is perfect, and this one is built and maintained by one person. If you find a security problem, please report it to the address above rather than disclosing it publicly, and it will be taken seriously.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes in a way that affects you, the date at the top will change and you will be told in the app. Continuing to use Life after that means you accept the updated policy.
